The Exploratorium, a world-class science museum, was set up in the year 1969. It has been defined as "a mad scientist's penny arcade, a scientific funhouse, and an experimental laboratory all rolled into one". The important sections of the museum include Bay Observatory, Tinkering Studio and Tactile Dome.
Alcatraz Island, located in the San Francisco Bay, is one the prominent National Historic Landmarks. The highlights at the location include an abandoned prison and ancient fortifications. Also there are several natural features such as rock pools and a seabird colony. A ferry ride to the island is available from Pier 33, near Fisherman's Wharf.
The oldest Chinatown in North America, has been one of the liveliest destinations in the city pulling in travelers from around the globe every year. Featuring the colourful and majestic history and culture of China, San Francisco Chinatown is the largest Chinatown outside of Asia. The site also plays host to major festivals and celebrations, such as Chinese New Year Parade, Chinese Culture Center Spring Festival and Chinatown Community Street Fair.
